How to register as an Intern Estate Agent

An intern Estate Agent is employed under services of a registered Estate Agency.
An intern Estate Agent is required to serve a period of twelve months being supervised by the principal so as complete the internship.

The following documents must be submitted to EAAB in order to be registered as an Intern Estate Agent:

- A fully completed and signed application form;
- Identity Document (ID) copy;
- Letter of employment from the Agency confirming employment and signed by the Principal;
- Proof of payment of R529.80.

For an Intern Estate Agent to qualify as a Full Status, the following requirements need to be met:

You need to have passed an Estate Agency Affairs Board examination under the old education curriculum as this will provide 18 credits towards their NQF Level 4 Qualification.  You also need  to serve a 12 Months internship.  During the internship you need to write the Professional Designation Examination (PDE) through an RPL Assessment Centre do the NQF Level 4 Qualification.

Once the internship has been successfully completed, only then can the intern apply for the PDE where they can then be assessed as to whether  they can eligible for exemption of the NQF Level 4 qualification.  Once an Intern Estate agent can prove to the Board that he qualifies for status change for being a Full Status, such an estate agent must apply to the Board for status change of his Fidelity Fund Certificate.

Having completed the internship period and having attained the FETC: Real Estate, or an acceptable equivalent qualification, they can achieve full status as a non-principal estate agent and proceed to undertake the Professional Designation Examination to obtain professional recognition as a non-principal estate agent;

It should be noted that the one year internship period, for the purpose of obtaining practical training as an estate agent, is obligatory for every newcomer to the estate agency profession no matter what qualifications that newcomer may hold;

However, the newcomer and estate agency undertaking concerned are, of course, free to make whatever mutually agreed arrangements they wish during the one year internship period;

All new estate agents entering the estate agency profession for the first time as from 15 July 2008 must serve a compulsory one-year internship period working under the active supervision and control of a principal estate agent, or of a full status estate agent, who must have at least three years practical experience;

A mentor-protégé relationship will, thus, be created;

The intern estate agent must also keep a logbook (also referred to as a ‘Portfolio of Evidence’) reflecting the various estate agency functions and activities that have been undertaken and performed during the course of the internship period;

The intern estate agent is required to complete the Further Education and Training Certificate: Real Estate, a qualification that is intended to enhance the provision of entry-level service within the property and real estate professions and to provide the broad knowledge, skills and values needed in the property and real estate environment;

The intern estate agent may be certificated against the Qualification after undergoing training through an accredited education provider or by way of the Recognition of Prior Learning route;

It is expected that, after having served as an intern estate agent for a continuous period of 12 months, the newcomer will attain the same degree of knowledge, skills and practical ability as estate agents who have already been active in the profession for quite some time;

The new educational dispensation is carefully designed to ensure that the theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom and the practical experience gained in the workplace compliment one another to provide a head start to success by introducing newcomers as painlessly as possible to the exciting new career that awaits them.
